AEROS LOSE CLOSE ONE TO BINGHAMTON 1-0
Emmanuel Garcia singled home Fernando Martinez in the bottom of the eighth and three Binghamton Mets pitchers held the Akron Aeros to four hits, en route to a 1-0 Binghamton victory at NYSEG Stadium Monday.
Akron (1-3) was handcuffed by Binghamton starter Jake Ruckle. The right hander, who was making his Double-A debut, tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings, retiring eight in a row at one point. Joe Hietpas (1-0) followed with 2 1/3 shutout innings of his own, retiring seven of the eight to face him.
Binghamton (3-2) catcher Rafael Arroyo led off the bottom of the eighth with an unsuccessful bunt attempt against T.J. Burton (0-2) before Martinez followed with a double down the rightfield line. That set the stage for Garcia, who hit an opposite-field single to left to score Martinez.
Eddie Kunz tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save in as many chances.
Tuesday, the Aeros and Mets play the second game of their three-game series. Lefty Jonathon Niese (1-0, 0.00) will start for Binghamton against Akron’s Kevin Dixon.
