DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN
Aeros score seven in 6th for 2nd straight game, beat Bowie 7-3
The Aeros scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the second straight game, and that one big inning was enough to secure a 7-3 victory over visiting Bowie before 1,936 fans at Canal Park Saturday afternoon. Akron improved to 4-5 with its second consecutive win, while the Baysox fell to 3-7.
The eerie similarities between Friday and Saturday’s contests went beyond the big 6th inning: there was also Bowie jumping out to a 3-0 lead in both games and the fact that the Aeros offense couldn’t get anything going for the first half of the game. Friday night Akron had just one hit in the first four innings; Saturday the Aeros had no hits through five innings against Bowie’s Chris Tillman. That changed once Tillman departed however, as the Aeros sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth.
Armando Camacaro got the inning started with a sinking liner to left that Kennard Jones got a glove on but couldn’t corral, allowing Camacaro to get to second with a double. After Jose Constanza grounded out, Brandon Chaves was hit by a pitch and Josh Rodriguez flied to center for the second out as it looked like Baysox reliever Dan Lonsberry would escape trouble. Michael Aubrey delivered a big RBI single however, going the opposite way with a 1-2 pitch to shallow left field to score Camacaro and make it 3-1. Wes Hodges then got ahead in the count 3-1 and saw the fastball he was looking for, hammering a two-run triple to the deepest part of center field to tie the game at 3-3.
Stephen Head and Ryan Goleski kept the inning alive by drawing back-to-back walks, and that was all for Lonsberry. Kam Mickolio replaced him out of the Bowie bullpen, and immediately got two quick strikes on Nathan Panther. With the count 0-2 however, Panther smoked a ground ball up the third base line that hopped directly over the bag for a double, clearing the bases and giving the Aeros a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Camacaro capped the inning with a knock to center to plate Panther with the final margin, as all seven runs scored with two outs in the inning.
J.D. Martin (2-1) was phenomenal in earning the win for Akron, tossing 3.1 innings of no-hit relief. Lonsberry (0-2) was tagged for six runs on three hits and two walks in just 0.2 innings in suffering the loss. Both starters were excellent, although neither factored into the final decision. Aeros lefty Ryan Edell allowed just two runners in the first four innings before allowing three runs in the fifth, and Tillman faced just one batter over the minimum in his five no-hit innings.
Camacaro went 2-4 and was the only Aeros hitter with multiple hits, although Hodges drove in two runs and Panther drove in three with only one hit each. Aubrey finished 1-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine games to open the season.
The finale of this four-game series is set for 2:05 p.m. Sunday, as the Aeros will send Kevin Dixon (0-0, 1.80 ERA) to the hill against Bowie left-hander Chris Waters (1-0, 1.13 ERA).
