AEROS BATS GO SILENT IN 7-2, 10 INNING DEFEAT

Binghamton scored 5 runs in the top of the tenth inning off of reliever Scott Roehl (0-1) to defeat the Akron Aeros in front of a crowd of 2,479 at Canal Park on Wednesday. Binghamton came back from an early 2-0 deficit to eventually defeat the Aeros on the first 10:35 a.m. “Education Day” of the season.

Akron jumped out to a 2 to 0 lead early on in the game on the backs on their best hitters and young starter David Huff. The 23-year-old UCLA graduate, and 2006 first-round draft-pick struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits in five scoreless innings. Solo home runs by Wes Hodges and Nathan Panther in the third and fifth innings respectively, made it all Aeros at the onset.

After Panther’s home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, however, the Aeros bats suddenly became quiet. Seventeen of the final eighteen batters for Akron were retired, and only one ball managed to even make it out to the outfield. The bullpen for the B-Mets went five no-hit innings, allowing just one walk and striking out three.

The B-Mets offense followed the lead of their strong pitching with a two-run, game tying top of the eighth inning. Dan Murphy started off the rally against Akron reliever J.D. Martin with a one-out single, followed by a Nick Evans doubled into left field. B-Mets designated hitter Mike Carp then brought them both home on a two-run single to right-center field, tying the ball game up at two runs each.

Binghamton completed the turnaround with an offensive explosion in the top of the tenth inning off of recently promoted reliever Scott Roehl. Things got started by a Jose Coronado single, and then a Josh Rodriguez throwing error on Dan Murphy’s hit enabled the runners to advance to second and third. Nick Evans brought them both home on a double to center field, giving the first baseman eighteen runs batted in through thirteen Binghamton games. A two-out, three-run home run by B-Mets left fielder Josh Petersen gave the Mets the lead for good.

Eddie Kunz (1-0) picked up the victory for Binghamton on the night, as he pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning. Although the B-Mets pitching staff was nearly perfect through the last six innings, they had significant troubles early on in the game. Starter Bobby Parnell allowed the home runs to Hodges (his third in two nights) and Panther, along with a fourth-inning double to Michael Aubrey. But those were the only hits the hometown Aeros could muster all morning long.

The Aeros hit the road Wednesday afternoon for a game Thursday night in Bowie, Maryland, with a 7:05 start time. Akron right-hander Frank Hermann (1-0, 6.55 ERA) is slated to pitch against Bowie Baysox right-hander Jason Berken (0-1, 2.70 ERA) in the opening match of a four-game series. Tomorrow night’s game also kicks off a weeklong road trip for the Aeros, who come back to Canal Park on Thursday, April 24. Tomorrow night’s broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
